Material and Plastic
UL’s
plastics and materials program set us apart. It
is unique and based upon our experience over the
last 100+ years. UL has researched historical
performance data to develop its standards.
This
page provides an overview of the most common programs.
|
UL’s
testing programs for plastics cover plastic
materials and related products for use in components
and parts of end-product devices and appliances.
Besides testing and certifying plastics,
UL has developed UL
IQ™ for Plastics, a powerful on-line
database that allows you to search more than
50,000 grades of UL Recognized plastics based
on the requirements of your application. Search
by product specifications, company name, file
name, generic family, grade and description
to get the plastic you need.
If you’re a manufacturer of
UL Recognized Plastic, you can use our “Extranet”
service and build hyperlinks from your "yellow
card" to your online product specifications,
contact information and MSDS sheets. Log on
to UL
IQ™ for Plastics for more details.

Plastics
The evaluation
of plastic materials may include the determination
of material flammability (burning characteristics),
ignition characteristics from various thermal
and electrical sources, electrical tracking,
other electrical, physical and mechanical characteristics
and analytical tests. In addition, the effect
of long-term exposure to elevated temperature
(air-oven ageing), water, ultraviolet light,
cold, etc. on property-retention may be evaluated.
Note:
Many electrical device manufacturers are also
looking for the appropriate material ignition
ratings, such as HWI and HAI, in addition to
flammability and CTI ratings!

Label
Materials
Label
systems consist of finished printed labels
for use indoors, where exposure to high
humidity or only occasional exposure to
water can be expected.
Label
printing materials may be a component of
a system and only consist of label material,
such as over laminations, unprinted or pre-printed
label stocks and inks that have been investigated
in combination with specific printing equipment.
Only unprinted (blank) areas of the label
are suitable for additional printing.
For
more details, please click
here.
It
is also possible that materials are evaluated
just for use by label printers (converters)
in fabricating finished printed labels.
Printed labels employing these materials
require examination of printing and other
features not evaluated in the investigation
of the materials alone.

Insulation
Systems
The
standard UL 1446 define an insulation system
as …“ a unique intimate combination of two
or more insulating materials used in electrical
equipment. An example is the combination
of magnet wire, ground insulation, varnish,
lead wire insulations, and outer wrapping
of a coil. ... Any material or component
existing outside the outer wrap of the device
or not in contact with the windings is not
determined to be part of the insulation
system.”
System
Versus Components
Electrical
insulation components are intended for use
by manufacturers in constructing complete
systems which will ultimately be evaluated
as an "Electrical Insulation System".
For
the purpose of their evaluation, the system
components have been investigated in combination
with additional materials.
An
electrical insulation system is used in
electrical products, as such motors, transformers,
solenoids, etc.

Printed
Circuit Boards
This UL program covers printed wiring boards
used as components in electrical devices
or appliances. The boards may use organic
or inorganic base materials in a single
or multilayer, rigid or flexible form. Circuitry
construction may include etched, die stamped,
precut, flush press, additive, and plated
conductor techniques. Printed-component
parts may also be used. Also included are
flexible printed wiring, which is defined
as “changes in the cross-sectional configuration
such as would be caused by right angle conductors,
mid-point connections, etc”.
