Background on ISO 9000
The ISO 9000 series provides general quality
management and quality assurance guidelines as
well as quality system models that can be used
by any type or size company anywhere in the world.
The Geneva-based International Organization
for Standardization (ISO) published the ISO 9000
series of standards for quality assurance in 1987.
It’s goal was to provide guidelines for
consistent quality practices across international
borders.
Year 2000 revisions
Every five years ISO is required to review and
update their Standards to ensure they evolve to
meet changing business needs and expectations.
The most recent revision to the ISO 9000 standards
was in December 2000, with the release of ISO
9001:2000. View UL’s transition plan for
this change online

see our ISO
9001:2000 section for an overview of what
to expect.
Many of the clauses in ISO 9000 focus on the
relationship between supplier and customer. ISO
registration helps suppliers demonstrate their
capabilities to meet quality requirements. It
helps purchasers obtain a higher degree of confidence
that products and services delivered can continually
meet their requirements.
